American Pie sexism

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 3, 2012, 1:04 AM
Watching American Pie movies and by god the later movies are sexist! Like in movie 4 when the girls discuss how girls can't be expected to think rationally. Yes, because girls are like that. A bit more stupid than men. Oh and in the fifth movie when the hot girls hang out with the geeks because that means that in the future they'll have someone to support them. Because girls going to college has no plans on getting careers of their own? Not to mention the constant nudity of women in these movies. Apparently all girls love to show their boobs to strangers! It's either that or the oh so common "I'm not ready for sex  yet". Why is it always the girls who aren't ready for sex? I feel sorry for men too watching these movies. They're portrayed as  neanderthals who care only about sex and only see women as objects to use to satisfy their lusts. To such an extent that they consider fucking a stranger just to have sex because the girlfriend isn't ready yet. Nice stereotypes there. I'd be equally offended by these movies if I was a man.

I did enjoy the first movie though. I think it's funny and the gender roles aren't fucked up in that one. But the latter movies? Not my cup of tea.

A comedy can be funny without being sexist and stereotyping gender roles. Those are things I'm against, things which I think are tragic, things which affect many people negatively. What signals does movies like these send out? Is it ok to objectify and degrade women just because it's comedy? You wouldn't tell a women a really sexist joke would you? So why say sexist movies are ok? It's the same thing. Saying all is ok because it's fiction is rather short sighted in my opinion.

I'm against ALL forms of censorship...and that's what you're talking about, censoring filmakers' rights to use what subject matter they choose. George Carlin says ANYTHING can be joked about.

It's not about censorship because I didn't say anything should be censored. Don't put words into my mouth which I didn't use. People can watch whatever crap they like. I'm just saying people should think before they spread stupid old fashioned ideals. Why are women so objectified? Because of Hollywood and fashion magazines. So is that something we should support? And why are people stuck in old fashioned gender roles? Because those gender roles are promoted in media. Is that something we should support? Personally I think not. And yes, if you have bad taste everything can be joked about but some of the most sexist things in the American Pie movies aren't even jokes! It's just a lot of unnecessary nudity which severs no point whatsoever. And it's a lot of unnecessary gender roles which aren't there to be funny either.

if you wanna attack something, attack something with more meaning, not a series of comedies...and it's nothing personal. Attack REAL sexism.

Just because sexism in movies isn't as horrible as sexism in real life that doesn't mean you should ignore it. You can't use the "not as bad as..." logic. If we were to do that nothing would ever be done about anything because there's always something worse that needs to be focused on. Sexism in movies helps normalize sexism in real life. Sexism is bad and shouldn't be normalized, simple as that.

And I'm not "attacking" things. I'm writing about how I feel about a certain subject. After all this is MY journal, where I will write about MY opinions.

When I was 11, my sister forced me to watch the same AP movies with her. And hell, I had the same opinion as you.

I think many, especially women are offended by these movies.
